New Connecticut Bottle Return Limits for 2026: What You Need to Know

Connecticut has made important changes to its Bottle Bill that affect customers bringing large quantities of bottles and cans to redemption centers.

Under Public Act 26-2, signed in March 2026, Connecticut lowered the thresholds for large-volume bottle and can returns. The law is aimed in part at strengthening oversight and preventing the redemption of containers that were purchased outside Connecticut.

What Are the New Bottle Return Limits?

For customers using a Connecticut redemption center:

Up to 1,000 containers per day: Customers can redeem without triggering the law's additional large-volume recordkeeping requirement.

More than 1,000 containers: The redemption center must collect required information from the individual, including identifying and vehicle information, the collection points of the containers, and the number of containers being returned. The customer must also certify that, to the best of their knowledge, the containers were originally sold in Connecticut and have not previously been redeemed.

4,000-container daily limit: A redemption center generally cannot accept more than 4,000 beverage containers from one person in a single day. Containers transported in one vehicle are treated as coming from a single person for purposes of these requirements.

At Connecticut's 10¢ refund value, 1,000 eligible containers represent $100, while 4,000 represent $400.

Important Exception for Nonprofits & Bottle Drives

The daily limit has an important exception.

The 4,000-container limit does not apply to nonprofit institutions or verified fundraising activities. This means qualifying schools, churches, Scout troops, charities and other organizations conducting verified bottle-drive fundraisers can bring larger collections to a redemption center.

Organizations planning a large bottle drive should contact the redemption center ahead of time so the fundraiser can be properly coordinated and verified.

Only Connecticut Containers Can Be Redeemed

Connecticut law prohibits obtaining the state's refund value for containers that a person knows or has reason to know were not originally sold in Connecticut or that were previously redeemed. Public Act 26-2 strengthened the state's rules concerning out-of-state container redemption.

Customers should therefore bring only legitimate, eligible Connecticut deposit containers.

Know Before You Go

Connecticut's updated rules are designed to provide greater accountability for high-volume redemptions while continuing to provide consumers with the full 10¢ refund value on eligible Connecticut deposit containers.
